When you think of Canada, what images immediately spring to mind? Snow? Blistering cold? Warm maple syrup? More snow? Even more cold? Mountaineers even?

While Canada is a hugely popular winter destination for many international travellers who love their winter and snow sports, many miss out on experiencing the country in the warmer months. Canada is actually home to some of the richest natural landscapes in the world, all of which truly come alive in the summer. Before you book your flights, here’s a guide to things to do in the Big White, even when there’s no white to be seen.

Festival Hop

There are countless festivals and events throughout the year around Canada, and some of the best ones happen in Spring and Summer. The Canadian Music Fest in Toronto runs from March 9 to 13, and features 800 artists performing at 55 different venues around the city. The festival showcases new Canadian and international talent from 25 different countries. Montreal is also a city famous for its festivals, such as the world-renowned Montreal International Jazz Festival. In its 32nd year in 2011, the festival has previously seen the likes of big name artists such as Steve Miller, Van Morrison, Bob Dylan, and Jamie Cullum. Performances run from June 25 to July 4, and you can customise your concert schedule and buy tickets on the festival’s website. Also, don’t forget the Montreal Grand Prix in late June!

Get Amongst Nature

Everybody already knows that Canada is famous for its national parks and stretches of untouched parklands nature reserves, and many are close to major cities. Yoho National Park is about a 1 hour drive from Banff. Algonquin Provincial Park in the province of Ontario is another beautiful national park which offers hiking, camping and water sports. Of course, the Canadian Rockies is probably the best known area for hiking and nature walks. There are a huge number of different parks, lakes and routes to take though, so be sure to do your research, or ask around for details before you decide on your hiking itinerary.

Ski

You can still get your skiing and snowboarding fix in the middle of summer, and in fact, many people choose this time of year to book their flights to Canada. Tearing up the slopes AND working on your tan at the same time? We think yes! Whistler truly comes alive in summer, with fishing, horseback riding, golf, skating and a plethora of shopping destinations and cafes. You can even trade in your two skis for two wheels, as Whistler is also famous for its mountain biking trails.

The added benefit of visiting Canada in the warmer months is that many people opt to travel to more ‘traditional’ summer destinations such as Europe, so flights can be easier to find. So whatever the time of year, there’s no excuse to not get excited about booking your flights to Canada!

Budgeting is one key thing for travel, make sure you keep an eye out for flights to Canada.
