From fashion stores, book shops, lifestyle goods and electronics, Bangkok is a shopping mecca. If it’s retail therapy you’re after, your shopping urge will be well satisfied in Bangkok. But don’t forget to step out of the airconditioning once in a while - The city’s street markets also show the diversity of Bangkok life and culture, and offer very low prices for a great range of products. Here’s a quick guide on where you’ll find the city’s best shopping hot spots.

- Lifestyle markets. Clothing, textiles, jewellery, accessories, electronic goods – don’t hesitate to seek out such things at the markets. Many new Thai designers sell their designs at markets, and it is a great way to buy directly from the people. Suan Lum, Patpong and Siam Square Night Markets are great places for clothing, souvenirs, DVDs, furniture, decorations and lifestyle goods, while the Chatuchak weekend markets are a huge 35-acre haven of over 8,000 market stalls, selling everything from clothes, accessories, textiles, food, souvenirs, and even animals.

- Produce markets. If you really want to get amongst the day-to-day Bangkok grind, the Pak Khlong Flower Market has countless stalls selling flowers in amazing colours, creating a rainbow patchwork of fragrance and beauty. The Damnoen Saduak Floating Market is also a unique experience you can’t miss, with fresh fruit, vegetables and cooked food being sold to customers from floating market boats.

- Malls. Bangkok has more shopping centres that you can shake a credit card at. While it may seem overwhelming trying to choose the ones with the best variety and quality, knowing what you’re looking for will narrow down your list of destinations. CentralWorld is Bangkok’s biggest shopping centre, with a variety of luxury and mainstream brands. Siam Paragon and Gaysorn house luxury designer brands for those wanting to splurge, and the famous MBK Centre has eight levels of 2000 shops selling everything from electronic to cosmetic goods, all at great prices.

You might have nabbed cheap flights to Phuket, but make sure you include Bangkok on your itinerary - you’ll won’t go home empty handed! If you want to make advantage of the great exchange rate, you can take dedicated shopping trips by finding cheap flights to Thailand to do your seasonal shopping.
